The NOAA Association of Commissioned Officers (ACO) has established the Brennan Family Service Support Fund. From the ACO’s website, you may make a donation to help support meals, flowers, and other immediate comfort to Rick’s family. Although no specific plans have been made at this time, the ACO has a longer term vision of supporting causes for which RDML Brennan was passionate should donations remain after immediate needs are met. The ACO website is as follows: https://noaacorpsaco.org/

A short biography on Rick:

Rear Admiral (lower half) (RDML) Rick Brennan became Coast Survey Director and U.S. National Hydrographer in April 2021, and is the 31st leader of the office since the first superintendent, Ferdinand R. Hassler, was appointed in 1833. He is responsible for overseeing NOAA’s hydrographic services, including the mapping and charting of all U.S. coastal waters, as well as representing the U.S. in international hydrographic efforts.

RDML Brennan has served with the NOAA Officer Corps for over 20 years. He has served on nearly every hydrographic ship in the NOAA fleet and on the U.S. Coast Guard Ice Breaker Healy. Previously, he led the Hydrographic Systems and Technology Program, served as the Chief of the Atlantic Hydrographic Branch, and served as the mid-Atlantic Navigation Manager. Other recent assignments include serving as the Chief of the Coast Survey Development Laboratory, as a senior policy advisor to VADM Manson Brown, the Assistant Secretary for Environmental Observations and Predictions at NOAA, and Chief of the Hydrographic Surveys Division. RDML Brennan has a Master of Science degree in ocean engineering from the University of New Hampshire’s Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping, and a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the Citadel.

I have known Rick since 2014 when I was appointed Hydrographer General of Canada. I have always been impressed by his talent, knowledge, commitment and friendly personality! I was pleased to see him promoted to RDML and Director of the Coast Survey recently. Like many, around the world, I am in shock and devastated that we have lost such professional colleague and first and foremost a deeply committed and authentic human being so early in life.

My sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to all his family and numerous friends.
