West Coast Chapter Update

January 23, 2016 4:46 PM | Anonymous
The THSOA-West Coast Chapter is pleased to announce the first official meeting in the San Francisco area was held on the 15th of October, 2015. The meeting was held across the Golden Gate bridge at the USACE – San Francisco District office in Sausalito. Early attendees were able to take a short cruise on the SF Bay Marine’s 51ft Eaglet and given a guided tour of the US Army Corps of Engineers San Francisco Bay Model. Afterwards, everyone celebrated with margaritas at the local USACE watering hole and then proceeded down town San Francisco to watch Blues Traveler at the famous Fillmore. Sponsors for this even were CARIS, Seahorse Geomatics, eTrac, Triton Imaging, Terrasond, Norbit, Hypack, and Bay Marine Services.

Presentation included:
  1. CARIS, Josh Mode – “Reducing Ping-to-Chart Time through Onboard Data Processing”
  2. SF Bay Marine, Kevin Tweed – “Acoustic Imaging Using ROV and 3D Sonar”
  3. Triton, Tony Ramirez – “Object Detection from Repeat High Resolution Multibeam Surveys”
  4. Terrasond, Chris Kemp – “Greenland Survey Operations & Satellite Based Vessel Tracking System”
  5. Group discussion lead by Mike Mutschler: Should Hydrographers be required to have a RPLS?

As of the meeting, Heidi informed everyone that the chapter account balance was $2,661.03. These are funds collected by the local chapter from the generous support of sponsors over the last couple years. During the meeting we talked briefly about the plan to use that money, which is to target students who wish to pursue the hydrographic route in school and provide them scholarships.

This was the first THSOA-West Coast Chapter meeting in San Francisco area, but it won’t be the last! Before the presentations started, both Josh Mode from CARIS and David Neff from eTrac volunteered to assist with coordinating THSOA events in the surrounding area.

Other THSOA-WCC meetings currently getting marked in calendar for 2016 are in Portland (location TBD), Seattle at Global Seas’ Admiral House (28th January) and San Diego (location TBD). For these events we seek hosts – if your organization is interested then please contact me.

Happy Fall!
