In June of 2016 I was joined by a group of my peers and colleagues in the industry for the inaugural meeting of THSOA Midwest Chapter.  We had a great first meeting and have since developed from a short 3-4 hour session to an all-day event with workshops and on-the-water demos.  Each new meeting brings a fresh group of folks it seems and we are fortunate to have some regular attendees as well.

I had the pleasure of working with Tami Beduhn who acted as Secretary and Brian Lounsbury who acted as Treasurer.  At each event we stressed the mission of THSOA and the newly formed chapter as being an avenue for people to learn.  We try to restate that at each meeting so we all remember why we are there.  The highlight of my time as Chair was having the ability to give away two $1,000.00 scholarships on Jan. 1, 2018.  Each member should feel very proud of that accomplishment as they all have a say in what that money goes towards.  To me that is an outstanding accomplishment by everyone involved and I extend a great thanks.

Thank you again for attending the meeting last Friday, it was a huge success.  As unanimously elected the new officers are:

    • CHAIR - Washington Bryan – Great Lakes Dredge and Dock
    • TREASURER - Dennis Buelow –  Spaceco
    • SECRETARY - Jon Arleth –  Gordie Fraser and Associates

In the end I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of the new chapter and see it grow. I am also very grateful to everyone who donated time, money and most importantly knowledge in our endeavor and I think with our newly elected officers THSOA-Midwest will only get better with time.

    Ladies and Gentlemen,

I would like to say thank you very much to each of you who took the time to travel to Chicago last Wednesday evening for the first meeting. I thought we had a successful first run and am very excited to meet with all of you again before Jan. 1.

I am contacting Hans VanSumeren at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City to secure a venue at the campus for the next meeting so the tentative dates will be Nov. 28, Dec. 2, Dec. 5, Dec. 9, Dec. 12 and Dec. 16. Let’s see what Hans has to say regarding what the college has available before we put out a vote amongst ourselves.

We should vote on officers at the start of the next meeting. I would like to volunteer as chair for the start, Tami Beduhn has volunteered as secretary and Brian Lounsbury treasurer. If we all agree please weigh-in with a “ya or nay.” for these options. If anyone else would like to put in a name please do so after this email.

In an effort to have the potential for added USACE involvement we discussed using the meeting to include some training presentations whereas the federal employees may be granted attendance and have more chance for participation. With this J.F. Brennan is prepared to deliver some data and information on multi-beam systems with a focus on ping-rate data vs. detection/modelling of surfaces and engineered structures. Any ideas from the group would be appreciated and we can look into a guest speaker again who could bring some good instruction to the group on relevant topic that we can all gain knowledge from.

Thank you again for taking time out of your lives to attend. I think this will be a start to something that we can all take value and knowledge from for the future.

    Kind Regards,
    James R. Dunkley
